Below: Judy and Karin with Elizabeth Gilbert, author of Eat, Pray, Love and Committed: A Skeptic Makes Peace with Marriage and the foreword to Torn Apart: United by Love, Divided by Law. Gilbert was honored this night – June 8, 2010 – by Immigration Equality for her work for same-sex binational couples.

Congressman Honda heard Judy’s story in his in-district office and understood the special aspect of immigration reform same-sex binational couples need.

We gave him his signed copy of Torn Apart: United by Love, Divided by Law. I signed it with the Japanese phrase that means thanks that never ends…Mike is a longtime friend and longtime ally for LGBT issues. Now he has learned about LGBT binational couples’ struggles, as we have!

She started visiting and asked Karin where she was from, etc., and then when she heard our story she said “What a bunch of bullsh*t! She could not believe our immigration and marriage situation. We always take the chance for the teachable moment. She got our card and our story and we hope she shares the information.
